Mission Statement
The Learning Lab was established to improve education for newcomers in Oakland Unified School District and around the country. Based at Oakland International High School, its researcher-practitioner staff work to uplift promising practices and knowledge to educators, policymakers, and researchers.
We believe that newcomers, like all students, are entitled to a free and appropriate public education that allows them to graduate high school ready for postsecondary opportunities. This entails:
Accessible instruction that includes grade level content
Inclusion in a thoughtfully designed school community
Support for the basic needs that make school attendance possible, with an emphasis on community-based schooling models.
